The Macmillan Club – a.k.a. the Cape Conservatives – kicked off the Southern Hemisphere Summer Season with two remarkable speakers.
On 12th December 2011 Andrew Henderson, the British Trade and Investment Commissioner (and HM’s former ambassador to Algeria) spoke with great gusto and hands-on insight on the topic of commerce and trade between South Africa and Britain.
On 9th February 2012 Baroness Chalker PC shared with us both her memories of the Thatcher government (she was for eight years minister for overseas development) and her unmatched knowledge in developing ethical and people-oriented business in Africa.
These dinner debates have become a regular feature for our growing Tory grouping – they are hosted by the Cape Town Club, and held in the famous Smuts Room, at the very table Field Marshall Smuts signed the declaration of war to Germany.
The Macmillan Club now has a correspondent in Johannesburg where we hope to host soon the first dinner debate outside the Cape.
