I second the remarks of Paul Gordon. Due to the 15 year cut-off rule, I will be effectively disenfranchised in November 2010. I am currently in Turkey and registered to vote. I also own property in the UK and have every intention of returning to the UK in the future. I am also liable to pay British income tax. I make no claim on the NHS or the education system or social security. Why is NuLabour so interested in denying me the right to vote?

After reading the above debate re. overseas voters an important point was never mentioned. Many of these people are British tax payers and as such, surely are entitled to a vote. If we contribute to the system shouldn'd this be so.

After reading the above debate,re voters abroad,I see no mention was made to the fact that many of these people are British tax payers. Surely as such, they should be entitled to a vote as they make a considerable contribution to the
Exchequer. As far as residual interests are concerned,we still have a residual family!!

       NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION !!!!!

Voting from abroad is a big con. By the time you receive and return the postal ballot papers, the election is over and your vote will not be counted. Yes you can vote by proxy, give your vote to someone else? no way!

What we need is to be able to elect our own MP who can represent us Ex Pats. Even though I think it is a complete waste of time, I can and will vote but what on earth can a MP for the Wakefield constituency, do for me? I am 1,950 miles south west of Wakefield, on an Island way out in the Atlantic. I have never lived in Wakefield and I am unlikely ever to go there,

Dear Sirs,

As a British citizen resident abroad and also as Honorary Secretary of the Madrid branch of Conservatives Abroad I wholeheartedly agree with the attempts of the above named Conservative MPs to ammend the very unfair electoral registration rules at present in force, above all, regarding the 15 year cut off disenfranchisement point. The idea that just because British people are living and working abroad, in an increasingly globalized world, have lost all contacts and interest in their own country is an absolute insult and preposterous lie.

The unfairness of the UK electoral laws for British people resident abroad must be changed when our party get into government soon.

Paul Gordon

Hon. Secretary
Conservatives Abroad Madrid

"Most ex-pats have got family, friends or property left in the UK. Many ex-pats will come home to live once again one day."

Slim chance of this happening, the UK government has mistreated generations of English / British, why would we want to go back to a country that favours others before their own?

Though I do think David Cameron is the man to lead the country, you need to think heavily about looking after those that Labour has completely forgotten about.

But moving back to the UK? I don´t think so.

Daphne,

I am no expert but if you have transferred into the portuguese health system and you have been referred to liverpool by your consultant in Portugal you may be able to use form E112 where by the putuguese health services will pay for at least some of the treatment.

The Spanish also refuse to provide NHS cover for EU members, under retirement age regardless of whether or not you are a resident or not, except when you are employed or self employed and pay fully into the Spanish system. Most ex-pat employment in Spain is non contractual so persons living there under retirement age are generally healthcareless. From what I can see the British NHS offers full healthcare to all European nationals. How come?

5 months have passed since my first comments about voting abroad. We can make the system more efficient and if we had a system for voting abroad as that offered by the Spanish government then many voters and the mayority are CONSERVATIVES would have the right to vote ..... but nobody at HQ has taken this on as a task, have they????

PS Excellent win in London - good on you Boris!!!!

Would just like to say that you are not alone in France, I live in Portugal and have been diagnosed with an eye cancer which cannot be treated in Portugal and the surgeon has referred me to Liverpool. I assumed that because Portugal is an EU country and therefore part of a reciprecol agreement that this would be treated under the NHS. I have now been told that because I do not reside in the UK for 6 months out of every year that I will have to pay for my treatment. We already have an appointment with the specialist in Liverpool for the 12.05.08 and because of the seriousness of the condition I am not prepared to cancel or postpone. Please can you take a look at this case and advise if there is anything you can do to ease my situation as financially to have to pay for this treatment will be a terrible burden.

Many thanks
